Washington, D.C. – Today, we are thrilled to announce the launch of Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to policy advocacy in the public interest, focused on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Our journey begins with a commitment to advocate for policies that safeguard the public while fostering innovation that can transform society positively.

As a former member of Congress and health tech startup founder, respectively, we know that AI stands at the frontier of a technological revolution, carrying the potential for profound societal impact. Recognizing the inherent risks in the dual-use nature of AI and emerging technologies, we are dedicated to ensuring that the United States adopts a proactive and thoughtful approach to AI governance. This means protecting public welfare and preventing the proliferation of dangerous capabilities without stifling the innovation that drives progress, to secure our nation’s competitive edge.

At ARI, our mission is clear: to help U.S. policymakers develop a thoughtful governance framework for rapidly advancing technologies that protects the public from harm while continuing to foster innovation. Our approach to the issue encompasses three distinct focus areas: current harms, including algorithmic bias and electoral interference; national security, including export controls and national competitiveness; and emerging risks, which covers threats that have only begun to appear but may evolve unpredictably as AI capabilities improve rapidly.

Our work is rooted in bipartisan advocacy, independence from industry influence, and a commitment to the public interest. To avoid conflicts of interest, we are funded by individuals who share our concern for responsible innovation, rather than by industry, ensuring our ability to act independently and focus solely on what is best for society.

We believe that our broad and bipartisan approach to the issue, independent voice, and experienced team will make ARI uniquely positioned to contribute to this national conversation.

As we announce the launch of ARI, we invite you to join us in this critical endeavor – you can donate, apply for a job, or simply join our mailing list to learn more. Together, we can shape a future where technological advancements are governed wisely, ensuring safety, security, and prosperity for all.

Sincerely,
