WASHINGTON, D.C., May 15, 2024 — In response to today’s release of the Bipartisan Senate AI Working Group roadmap, Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) Executive Director Eric Gastfriend released the following statement:

The AI Working Group’s bipartisan roadmap marks an important step forward in ensuring the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence, and we commend Senators Schumer, Rounds, Heinrich, and Young for their leadership on this issue. The roadmap provides a detailed guide to all major areas of AI policy, and is filled with constructive policy proposals and thoughtful questions for further investigation. The fact that the report comprehensively addresses the policy challenges posed by AI across current harms, American innovation, national security, and emerging threats is an impressive achievement. At Americans for Responsible Innovation, we have been advocating for many of the policy measures featured in this proposal, such as fully funding the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) budget request for AI-related work in the upcoming fiscal year – a request we supported by co-leading a joint letter signed by over 90 organizations, companies, and universities.

As the capabilities of AI systems continue to rapidly advance, Congress needs to advance legislation that builds upon this framework so that we can prepare for the transformative impact AI will have. We look forward to working with these Senate leaders and others in Congress to refine and expand this proposal in the weeks and months ahead. It is time to move forward with thoughtful legislation to harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding Americans from the harms and risks presented by AI systems. The window to establish U.S. leadership on global AI policy is shrinking, and the cost of inaction is too high.
